I hope you all had a healing, fun and beautiful weekend. My weekend was filled with a pool party and tubing down a river. It was a much-needed break but also very busy.

I woke up this morning and my soul was craving more rest but my first instinct was to push through. When I’m not working as hard as I possibly can I often feel guilty and like I should be doing more.

Here’s the thing, rest is actually a crucial part of our personal development journey. If we’re exhausted from making ourselves do all the things all the time we will burn out and lost all the momentum we’ve been building.

Yes, there are times when I have to push through. My depression often makes it so that resting makes me feel worse and on a normal day pushing myself can improve my mood and mental health. However, there are also times when I’m just freaking tired and need to slow down a little bit.

I think of it like a slingshot. It might feel like you’re been pulled backward but you’re actually going to be able to jump forward much quicker in the long run.

I often struggle to know if I should rest or if I should push myself. Here are a few of the questions I ask myself if I’m struggling to know what the right thing to do is.

  • What does my soul want less/more of?
  • What would my future self want me or tell me to do?
  • If I’m being honest what do I think the best thing for me to do is?
  • If I wasn’t worried about what other people think what would I want to do?
  • What would I tell a friend to do in this situation?

I still get this wrong sometimes and push myself when I should be resting and vice versa. However, I know the more I can appreciate my mistakes on this personal development journey the easier it will be to love myself through them and ultimately the more they will serve me.
