If you’re feeling uninspired by setting the same old same old goals this guide is for you. Last year for New Years I wrote a list of totally boring and uninspiring resolutions. You know the one I’m talking about; drink more water, read more books etc. While those are good things to do they felt really bland and they didn’t make me say “hell yes” deep in my heart. I tore that list to pieces and sat down one night and rewrote my goals from an inspired and mission driven place. Less than a year later I’ve accomplished everything I set out to accomplish and had the best year of my entire life. I hope these tips help you do the same.
Know Your Mission
Before you start writing out goals you need to know what your mission is. Spend some time thinking about what your mission statement would be for your life. If you set goals without a mission statement they are going to lack a higher purpose. If you have no idea what your purpose is (been there) spend some time journaling about the times in your life when you felt happiest and most alive. Try to identify the things that light you up inside. We spend so much of our lives getting through the daily grind on autopilot it can be hard to turn into your purpose. You have unique gifts and a unique perspective and by keeping that to yourself and not sharing it with the world you are doing everyone a disservice. You only have one life so figure out what the hell you want to do with it.
Tie Your Goals to Your Mission
If your mission in life is to be a thought leader in your area of genius and to change a fuck ton of lives then you can start to build your goals out from there. What do you need to do every day to be the bad ass leader of your dreams? Write a new daily routine and that might include things like vitamins and drinking water but those tasks need to be tied to your bad ass mission statement. Writing out goals like “drink more water” without anchoring it in a bigger purpose is a pretty boring goal and you’ll probably forget about it in a week or less. Committing to becoming the healthiest version of yourself in order to complete your life’s purpose can help you feel inspired and committed enough to make real changes to your life.
Stop F-cking Around
Once you have your mission statement completed and you have goals wrote to help you live your life’s purpose get really serious. People change their entire damn lives every day. This is the only shot you get at this life so this is not the time to play small. A lot of goal setting guides talk about setting reasonable goals so you don’t get overwhelmed. I’m here to tell you to screw that. I personally think you need to dream freaking bigger. You can break your dream down into smaller goals to help keep you working in the right direction but make sure you’re working towards something that you really freaking want. Your dream should make you excited to get out of bed in the morning. If it doesn’t spend some time reflecting on why you want that dream. Maybe you thought your dream was to be a Doctor but once you thought about it you realized that you actually don’t want to be a Doctor but you wanted your parent’s approval. Your dream needs to be your deepest and purest desire.
Get Committed
Hire a trainer or a coach. Enlist a friend. Start blogging about your journey. Do whatever you need to do to be accountable. If you want to chase down some big damn dreams then you need to get ready to put in the freaking work. Make a task list and keep track of how you are doing. Tell everyone you know what you’re doing. Do whatever it is you need to do to be accountable and start busting your ass. It’s easy to go after a goal really hard for a week but I’m talking about totally transforming your life. This is a long game that we’re playing and you need to get ready to put in the work for years or more.
Get Started
Just start. Right now. Today. It’s so easy to hold onto our ideas and dreams and put off getting started. If you’ve been waiting to do something stop waiting and start taking big messy steps towards it. The best way to figure something out is to do it. It’s so easy in this day and age to become paralyzed by doing research or trying to have everything figured out. Give up on perfection and start taking action. I wanted to start my blog for years before I actually did. I wish I could go back in time and give myself a kick in the ass to stop waiting around and to just start DOING it.
I hope this inspires you to dream big and write some goals that freaking terrify you in the best way possible. It’s so easy to feel stuck and uninspired by your day to day life and to forget what your purpose in life is. Get crystal fucking clear about what you want in life and go after it. You deserve to have everything that you want in this life.
