I hope you’re having a great day today. To be honest, I had a bit of a struggle this morning but it made me realize something that I want to share with you.
This morning I didn’t want to go to the gym.
I usually go 5 or 6 times a week but I’ve been skipping it for the last week or so. I started to slip into my old negative self-talk patterns and all the troll thoughts started to creep in.
“you can’t ever stick to anything”
“You’re never going to be the person you want to be. You always mess it up”
However, I decided that I was not going to let these stupid thoughts hijack my day. If you think this story ends with me going to the gym you’re wrong. I decided to go for a walk with my dog and listen to my favorite podcast. This is one of my favorite activities lately and it was such a nice way to start the day.
A lot of times we don’t realize how small steps can make a big difference. I still got a little exercise and it didn’t feel like a big struggle the way going to the gym would have felt. It’s so much better to take those small baby steps than to try and be perfect all the time.
Here are some of the questions I ask myself when I don’t want to do something:
- How can I make this easier?
- Does this have to be done now?
- What would I need to do to make this fun?
- What would I need to do to let this be easy?
- How would the next-level version of myself handle this feeling or situation?
Personal development doesn’t have to be a struggle all the time. Sometimes it can be a relaxing walk around the block with your dog.
